Types of Mounting Available - Styrene, Foam Core & Gator Board

.040 Styrene Styrene is a thin plastic material that is our least expensive mounting option. It is roughly 1 Millimeter thick. It has a completely smooth surface. It is easy to cut, and available in most any size up to 24"x36". This option is great for many uses as it easily can fit in a frame.

Foam Core This is the most common type of mount board. It is 3/16" thick and easy to cut. It does have a tendency to warp, which is most noticeable on large sizes (16x20 and up). Foam Core is less expensive than Gator Board, and is a great option for temporary purposes. Foam Core is white.

Gator Board (Two thicknesses: 3/16" and 1/2") Gator Board is very similar to Foam Core, except that it is stiffer and has a laminate backing which seals the board from moisture and makes it so that it does not warp like Foam Core. Gator Board is black.

3/16" Gator Board is available in just about any size - 1/2" Gator Board is only available in the listed sizes as it does not cut as well.

When mounting prints we commonly need to trim an edge or two which can result in the finished mounted print being slightly smaller than the original size. We try to keep this to a minimum and almost always less than 1/4" smaller on either side. If your mounted print must be exactly to size please let us know in advance.

How do I order?

Please use our ROES ordering system to order, all of our large format sizes and prices are in there and you will see a preview of the crop that you can adjust as needed. if you can't get ROES to work you can also use our Simple Order System.

What is the turn around time for large prints?

Large format prints up to 24x36 are usually done in 24 hours. Prints larger than 24x36 take an extra day. If you are also having the print mounted that may take an extra day.

Shipping Info

Large format prints are shippable up to a certain size. Unmounted prints up to 24x36 usually qualify for our $7.95 flat rate shipping (in a tube). Mounted prints are an additional charge if they are over 16x20. We do not ship mounted prints larger than 24x36. Please see our Shipping page for more info.

Are these ink jet prints?

Yes, prints that are 16x20 and larger are printed on a wide format ink jet printer (Canon ipf8400). This is a professional level ink jet printer that can print up to 44 inches wide and uses a 12 color ink system. These prints look fantastic!

Should I mount my large print?

Generally we would say yes. If you are going to purchase a frame and put your image in it yourself, we highly recommend you mount it first (ideally on styrene as it is thin and will fit easily). If you frame an unmounted print it will probably end up with ripples after a while where the paper print settles. If it is mounted the print will stay flat and not ripple.

You can also mount your print on Gator Board and add the hanging cleat and then just hang that on the wall without a frame for a clean and simple look.
